BAT is used by Windows NT to set environment variables in command line sessions. Same file, different function. A registry change is required to use it. NT and CONFIG.NT. These are the actual equivalents of the MS-DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, but they don't run at bootup they run for every NTVDM

Loading ANSI.sys in Config.nt

NT and CONFIG.NT configure the DOS subsystem that's created only when you first run a 16-bit DOS program (ie, "MZ" executable) from CMD.EXE. There is a nice program called WinCD. At the moment it is actually wrote for 3.11 but works fine with NT. You simply change directory with that and then start DOS box.
